Grant Description
Grants of up to $20,000 to New Jersey nonprofit organizations for programs that promote healthy food options in eligible locations. Funding is intended to assist community-based organizations in enhancing neighborhood health through collaborations, nutrition education, and broader access to fresh, healthy food. Eligible organizations are helping to strengthen the local food system in Newark.

This annual, community-determined grant program has partnered with organizations across Newark that are growing the local food system and increasing access to fresh, healthy food. Whole Cities Foundation will offer grant funding to each selected organization, and there is no restriction on the amount of grant funds that can be used for overhead, ongoing expenses, or infrastructure such as purchasing land, salaries, and stipends. Whole Cities hopes to support projects in all five wards.

Definition of Food Access:

  • Fruits and vegetables are affordable, high quality, familiar, and close by.
  • Community members have a safe, accessible way to reach them.
  • Access is for the long-term (ex., a garden that produces for years, not a one-time meal).
  • Community members have a say in the sources of these fruits and vegetables.
Project categories include:
  • Community Garden
  • Urban Farm
  • Agricultural Skills Development
  • Farmers Market or Co-op
  • Pop Up Market or CSA
  • SNAP Incentive Program
  • Mobile Market
  • Nutrition Education and Healthy Cooking Class
