Grants of up to $10,000 to New Jersey nonprofit organizations and municipalities in eligible regions for the preservation of local historic structures. Funding is intended for structural work necessary for the restoration and rehabilitation of publicly accessible buildings that are usually fifty years or older. Eligible projects must be located in Monmouth County.

The Commission is the official County body created by the Board of Chosen Freeholders for the promotion of preservation of Monmouth County history. Its principal program is the Historic Preservation Grants, an undertaking that recognizes the acute need for funding to preserve Monmouth County’s rich and diverse built environment. This program provides enabling funds to serve as a model for other giving and to encourage municipal and organizational commitment.

Preservation, restoration or rehabilitation of historic structures in Monmouth County, usually fifty years or older, which are accessible to the public are eligible. The program covers essentially structural work for projects commonly known as “bricks and mortar” undertakings.

Cost of materials for “bricks and mortar” type construction and wages of skilled workers are allowable expenses.

Estimated Size of Grant:

There is a $500 minimum and a $10,000 maximum grant per applicant.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants eligible for funding: Non-profit organizations and municipalities in Monmouth County, without regard to the entity’s size or budget, which do not have outstanding at year-end an incomplete Commission grant older than two years. In other words, when applying in 2021, an applicant will not be eligible for a 2022 grant if a Commission grant for years 2019 or earlier is outstanding on December 31, 2021.

Due to a New Jersey Supreme Court ruling, houses of worship are no longer eligible for these grants.

For information about projects not eligible for funding, see the following link: https://www.co.monmouth.nj.us/documents/58/2022_Historic_Preservation_Grant_App.pdf#page=2

Pre-proposal Conference:

The application and the submission process will be reviewed at a Grants Workshop, to be held both in-person (following existing COVID protocols) at the Planning Board Conference Room, 2nd Floor, Hall of Records Annex, 3 East Main Street, Freehold, and remotely on a Cisco Webex platform, at 6:00 PM, Monday, September 27, 2021.

Register for link by contacting Executive Director, John Fabiano by e-mail.

Pre-Application Information:

Completed applications are due November 5, 2021. Successful applicants are notified shortly after the January 24, 2022 Commission meeting, while the grant awards are presented at the subsequent Commission meeting on February 28, 2022.

Start your preparations early, as many have found that obtaining two reliable bids can be the most difficult and time-consuming step.

Funds are allocated in the form of a dollar for dollar matching basis.
