Grants to USA individuals and organizations serving people with developmental disabilities for medical equipment, adaptive toys, services, and therapy devices. Funding is intended to cover the cost of equipment and services which are not covered by insurance but are necessary to maximize potential and obtain the best quality of life.
Many individuals with developmental disabilities, such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Down Syndrome, require regular physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and/or behavioral therapy. Durable medical equipment such as wheelchairs, braces, and gait trainers may also be necessary to support and teach basic physical functions. The Foundation has also approved grants for services and equipment such as lifts, adaptive bicycles/strollers/car seats, specialized summer camps and other necessary items.
Recipients must have developmental disabilities as defined by the Foundation. The Foundation defines “developmental disability” as a severe, chronic disability that:
-Is attributable to a mental or physical impairment or a combination of mental and physical impairments;
-Manifests before age ten;
-Is likely to continue indefinitely;
-Results in at least one developmental delay or an established risk; and
-Causes the person to need a combination and sequence of special care, treatment, or provision of services for an extended period of time.
